In July 2010, I went on my first overnight backpacking trip to the Maroon Bells on Four Pass Loop Trail with my husband and brother-in-law. The scenery on this hike is absolutely stunning and worth every ounce of effort!
There is a ton of information out there about the logistics of this hike so I am not going to bore you with the details.
The only tip I will offer is this: try to mitigate the lightning danger as much as possible by getting up early so that you are off the passes and in the trees by 1 or 2 in the afternoon. There are four passes in 28 miles on this hike so the timing can be awkward if you are greenhorn flat-lander like I was. I got a rude welcoming to the backpacking world as I was running down Trail Rider Pass with lightning striking around me. It was so worth it though!
